Education Committee debate centers on FY2027 school budget challenges and state aid

WEYMOUTH — Committee debates FY2027 school budget shortfall as state aid lags inflation. Superintendent Melanie Curtin reported level service funding must grow 5.27 percent to $94,877,714, but state Chapter 70 aid will increase only 0.25 percent. Special education costs now consume 26 percent of the operating budget and have surged 59 percent statewide since 2021, while utilities and transportation each exceed $5 million annually.
Senator Patrick O'Connor presented the state FY2027 budget at $62.8 billion with $7.6 billion for Chapter 70, and proposed escalating Circuit Breaker reimbursements from 75 to 100 percent over five years to offset special education placement costs. The committee voted unanimously to support a letter to the state delegation requesting Circuit Breaker increases and municipal snow removal aid.
