Environmental Committee Continues Herring Run Water Sources Discussion

WEYMOUTH — Environmental Committee advances herring run water sources study to full Town Council. The committee unanimously voted to report its February 18 findings to the Town Council at its March 2 meeting, continuing work begun in June 2025. Chair Christopher Heffernan heard presentations from Kathy Swain and Samantha Woods, Executive Director of the North and South River Watershed Association, on a plan to potentially switch Weymouth's drinking water source from its ponds to the MWRA.
Scott Dowd, the town's Conservation Commissioner since 2009 and a 33-year professional at the New England Aquarium, recommended the switch could increase herring production while enabling safe swimming and creating recreational resources. Woods noted the town could pursue state grants through the Division of Ecological Restoration's Priority Habitat Restoration Project Program, pending completion of a hydraulic study to determine water requirements.
