Weymouth Rededicates Lovell Field After $6.5 Million Parks Reconstruction

WEYMOUTH — September 14, 2018 — Weymouth rededicated Lovell Memorial Field in East Weymouth after a $6.5 million reconstruction that turned a deteriorated complex into a multi-sport facility. Mayor Robert Hedlund said the project began with a roughly $12 million Activitas design that was trimmed to $6.5 million through in-house revisions by Recreation and Parks Director Steve Riley and Facilities Manager John McLeod, funded entirely within the town's existing capital budget without a debt exclusion. The same ceremony rededicated Francis "Jabber" Slattery Field, a baseball diamond on the same grounds, and unveiled a commemorative plaque for Civil War veteran Colonel Benjamin Starks Lovell, whose family donated the land. South Shore Health System sponsored a "Story Walk" literacy installation along the new playground. Hedlund disclosed the town is in early discussions with the state on a further, unspecified addition to the complex.
