Weymouth School Committee Adopts Post-MCAS Graduation Requirements for Class of 2025
WEYMOUTH — February 6, 2025 — Weymouth School Committee approves new graduation requirements and updated course catalog in unanimous votes. The committee voted unanimously at its February 6 meeting to adopt revised 2025 graduation requirements reflecting the state's elimination of MCAS as a mandatory standard, codifying an alternative competency determination for seniors who did not pass one or more MCAS sections — students may now satisfy the requirement through successful completion of designated coursework in ELA, mathematics, or science. The committee also combined second and third readings of the Weymouth High School program of studies and approved it in a single session, with changes including a renamed English course open to all 12th graders, corrected science elective eligibility language, and reclassified special education courses. Superintendent Carolyn Curtin confirmed Warrant 32-2025, dated February 3, in the amount of $1,361,916.51, was approved as part of the consent agenda. The meeting opened with a moment of silence for four long-serving school employees who died in the final week of January, including 39-year math teacher Paul Dussault and 32-year educational support professional Ellen Butler; Weymouth Educators Association President Dr. Mike Murphy called Butler "everybody's grandmother."
