Weymouth School Committee Approves $92 Million FY26 Budget Amid Funding Uncertainty

WEYMOUTH — March 27, 2025 — Weymouth School Committee votes unanimously to submit a $92 million unbalanced FY26 budget amid a projected $1.9 million funding gap. The committee approved the $92,079,118 operating budget request at its March 27 meeting, a 5.27 percent increase that includes ten compliance and safety positions, roughly $400,000 in high-priority staffing needs, and $824,000 in transportation costs — the latter reflecting a roughly 20 percent year-over-year surge. Assistant Superintendent Smith warned that if state and local revenues grow only 3 percent, the district could face the elimination of approximately 26 positions. Member Dana put the committee on notice against athletic fee increases, calculating a proposed 5 percent hike would yield "less than $14,000" in new revenue while potentially pricing out low-income student athletes. The committee also voted unanimously to accept a $106,380 gift from the family of the late Chapman Middle School student Jack Murray, to be held in the district's revolving gift fund and applied over ten years to instrument rentals and music camp costs for Chapman band students.
