Weymouth School Committee Approves CTE Admissions Policy Ahead of State Deadline

WEYMOUTH — October 9, 2025 — Weymouth School Committee unanimously approved a revised Career Technical Education admissions policy ahead of a state November 1 deadline. The committee combined and completed the second and third readings of the Weymouth High School CTE admissions policy, which now includes a DESE-mandated middle school pathway section codifying outreach activities at Chapman Middle School, including eighth grade building tours being reinstated after a multi-year absence. Superintendent Melanie Curtin told the committee that MCAS scores at the high school level "saw significant declines" this year, consistent with a statewide trend she linked in part to reduced student motivation after MCAS was removed as a graduation requirement; a full district data presentation is set for December. The committee also accepted a semi-annual gift report showing $127,541.95 in monetary donations and $59,275.44 in in-kind donations from January through June 2025, with more than $20,000 raised through a new athletic sponsorship program this fall alone. A first reading of a proposed school admissions policy requiring students to reestablish residency before entering grades 6 and 9 was introduced, with a pilot for fifth graders set to begin in spring 2026.
