Weymouth School Committee Approves Middle School Handbook, Adds December Meeting Date

WEYMOUTH — May 1, 2025 — Weymouth School Committee unanimously approved the 2025-26 middle school student handbook and added a December 4 meeting to the coming year's calendar at its May 1 session. The committee voted to combine and pass the handbook's second and third readings in a single night, incorporating two amendments: a prohibition on students arriving tardy bringing large beverages such as Dunkin Donuts or energy drinks into the building, and clearer heading language on page 56 to explicitly bar food delivery services such as DoorDash. The committee also approved a 2025-26 meeting schedule with the added December 4 date to close a five-to-six-week gap in the fall calendar and accommodate school improvement plan presentations. Superintendent Melanie Curtin introduced Tana Django, the incoming principal of West Alternative Elementary School, who holds more than 25 years of education experience and is completing her fifth year as a principal in Millis. On the budget front, Curtin said the mayor has proposed a 3 percent increase for the schools in fiscal year 2026 — consistent with district planning — but warned that the fiscal year 2027 outlook "could potentially be worse," citing revenue projections from the mayor's chief of staff. A revised public comment policy, BEDH, cleared its first reading but will be wordsmithed before the May 15 second reading after member Danielle Macinnis raised concern that language barring "specific" references to personnel could still inadvertently identify students in small special education programs.
