Weymouth School Committee recognizes CPAC Month, approves $1.37 million warrant

WEYMOUTH — November 7, 2024 — Weymouth School Committee voted unanimously to recognize November as CPAC Awareness Month and approved a $1,370,333.85 financial warrant at its November 7 meeting. Weymouth High School Principal Karen Monahan and Assistant Principal Melissa Dolan reported a 45 percent drop in conduct incidents in the first quarter compared to the prior year, along with a 40 percent surge in AP test participation — more than 700 tests taken — and 25 graduates earning the AP Capstone Diploma. Chapman Middle School Principal Jenny Dolan credited the school's new cell phone-free policy with reducing suspensions and improving classroom engagement, noting that more than 93 percent of Chapman's roughly 1,200 students are complying. Superintendent Melanie Curtin said the district is continuing MCAS retesting while awaiting state Department of Education guidance on graduation requirements following the passage of statewide Question 2, with any changes expected no earlier than December. During public comment, parent John Hanula told the committee his daughter, a Talbot Elementary life skills student, has been without a speech-language pathologist for five weeks after four interviewed candidates rejected the district's job offer.
