Weymouth School Committee Sets March 27 Deadline for FY26 Budget Vote

WEYMOUTH -- January 23, 2025, Weymouth School Committee hears FY26 budget timeline and first reading of high school graduation requirement overhaul. Superintendent Melanie Curtin and Assistant Superintendent Brian Smith told the committee January 23 that a preliminary budget will be released February 13, with a public hearing March 13 and a final School Committee vote March 27, after which the budget goes to Mayor Hedlund's office. State Chapter 70 revenue growth projections are running between 2.2 and 3 percent. Assistant Principal Bri Northrup led the first reading of a rewritten Program of Studies for Weymouth High School, the major changes driven by the elimination of the MCAS graduation requirement and the capstone requirement; highlights include a new 0.25-credit personal finance graduation requirement, an increase in unified arts credits from 1.5 to 2.0, and the removal of several low-enrollment courses. A standalone School Committee vote on the class of 2025 competency determination was placed on the next meeting's agenda.
