Weymouth School Committee votes to negotiate three-year deal with interim superintendent

WEYMOUTH — December 5, 2024 — Weymouth School Committee votes unanimously to negotiate a three-year contract with Interim Superintendent Melanie Curtin, skipping a competitive search. The committee, meeting December 5, determined that Curtin's tenure since May had served as a sufficient audition for the permanent role. Kimberly Ferreira, chair of the town's Special Education Parent Advisory Council and a veteran of the previous superintendent search, told the committee in public comment that "not a single one would I want to bring back for an interview before Melanie." The committee also unanimously created an athletic subcommittee to meet bimonthly, received a fall athletics report showing $81,790 collected in user fees from 499 athletes and $13,412 remaining from a $20,000 Chesna Soccer Tournament donation that is keeping admission free for students at home games, and heard administration flag growing bus lateness at four south-side elementary schools — with a family survey and a possible 15-minute start-time shift planned for early 2025.
