Weymouth secures $11.5 million for SWNAS water, sewer upgrades

WEYMOUTH — The town has locked in $11,551,500 from the Master Developer redeveloping the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station to fund continued water and sewer infrastructure upgrades, even as Mayor Molisse urged residents to take precautions against the coming heat and town officials moved to knock down confusion over a boil-water alert meant for a neighboring community.

The town announced it has negotiated an upfront payment of $11,551,500 from the Master Developer to fund continued water and sewer infrastructure improvements needed ahead of further redevelopment of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station (SWNAS), one of the largest active development sites in town.

Mayor Molisse issued a message urging residents to prepare for upcoming heat, asking residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity and check on elderly neighbors.

Separately, the town clarified that Weymouth's drinking water remains safe after some residents received text alerts about a boil-water order. The Department of Public Works and water officials confirmed there is no boil-water order in effect for Weymouth; the alert applied to a neighboring community.

The town also flagged a wildlife alert after a known bobcat den was identified near Hill Street and Grant Street in East Weymouth. Officials said attacks on humans are extremely rare, but bobcats may view cats, small dogs and other small domestic animals as potential prey.

On the tax front, preliminary Fiscal Year 2027 first-quarter tax bills, mailed June 29, are due by Monday, Aug. 3.
