Weymouth Town Council Withdraws National Grid Petition, Advances Electricity Aggregation Study

WEYMOUTH — January 17, 2023 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously withdrew a National Grid utility petition and referred an electricity aggregation proposal to committee at its January 17 meeting. The council voted 10-0 to withdraw measure 22-136, a National Grid Verizon utility petition for 6 Fog Road, after the town received notice on January 12 that the petition was no longer necessary amid ongoing efforts to underground utilities in Columbian Square. CFO James Mallory, presenting on behalf of Mayor Headland, introduced measure 23-004 to authorize research and contracting for community electricity load aggregation, which the council referred to the Economic Development Committee 10-0. Councilor Heffernan, chair of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Committee, reported that Weymouth has received $250,122.63 of an expected $1.2 million from the Johnson and Johnson opioid settlement, with payments continuing through 2038 and potential additional funds pending from settlements with CVS, Walmart, and Teva.
