Weymouth Warns Residents Of Fake Invoice Email Scam

WEYMOUTH — The Town of Weymouth is warning residents about a wave of fraudulent emails soliciting payment through fake invoices designed to look like they come from municipal departments.

Town officials said the scam emails arrive from addresses built to mimic real municipal accounts, citing one example: Planning-Dept.TownOfWeymouthNorfolkCountyMA@usa.com. The town is urging residents not to pay any invoice received by email without first verifying it directly with the relevant department, and to report suspicious messages.

Two meetings tied to the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station redevelopment area are set for Thursday, August 27. The Southfield Redevelopment Authority is scheduled to meet that day, and a pre-construction information session on the broader SWNAS redevelopment project, whose venue was relocated to Chapman Middle School earlier this week, will also be held.
