WEYMOUTH — October 24, 2023 — Weymouth's Conservation Commission issued three compliance approvals and continued four enforcement cases at its October 24 meeting. The commission unanimously granted a three-year extension — a variance from the standard one-year limit — for the Commercial Street Bridge reconstruction project operating under DEP file number 81-1220, citing unfinished engineering plans and unsecured funding. Certificates of compliance were issued for the Mill River culvert repair behind Shaw's supermarket on Washington Street and a partial certificate for 655 Washington Street, where vegetation monitoring shows over 75 percent plant survival with two years of monitoring still required. An order of conditions was approved for a geomat alternative septic system at 67 Rear Norton Street after DPW issued a waiver from sewer connection requirements. The contested 475 Columbian Street fill case, where the property owner's attorney disputes the commission's jurisdiction, is expected to move toward formal fines at the November 14 meeting. In other business, herring warden Phil warned commissioners that a sluice gate at the Nikos herring run has never operated correctly and that without repairs before March, migratory fish could enter the town's flood control system — a problem the town previously spent roughly $800,000 to prevent.
