Weymouth Schools See MCAS Growth but Seventh-Grade ELA Scores Stall

WEYMOUTH — October 5, 2023 — Weymouth School Committee reviews 2023 MCAS data showing uneven recovery from pandemic-era learning loss. Superintendent Robert Wargo presented results at the October 5 meeting, citing a 70 percent single-year jump in sixth-grade ELA scores and 24 percent growth in seventh-grade math from 2022 to 2023, while flagging stagnant seventh-grade ELA performance — the same cohort sat at 27 percent meeting or exceeding expectations in both sixth and seventh grade. Committee member Rebecca pressed Wargo to present the full scoring distribution, arguing that the data shown represented only roughly half of all tested students; Wargo agreed to provide complete figures at the October 19 meeting. On graduation eligibility, Wargo reported just four of more than 420 current juniors are presently ineligible for either a passing MCAS score or an Educational Proficiency Plan. The committee unanimously nominated Tracy Nardone as the district's delegate to the MASC Annual Conference, set for November 8 through 10.
