Weymouth Council Refers Washington Street Zoning Overlay Expansion to Committees

WEYMOUTH — October 16, 2023 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously refers Washington Street zoning overlay expansion and approves Board of Health appointment. The full 11-member council voted 11-0 Monday to send Measure 23-125, a proposed extension of the Village Overlay District to properties at 238 Washington Street, to both the Planning Board and the Ordinance Committee. Attorney Gregory Galvin, representing property owners Christopher Bruce and Jason Kennedy, argued the overlay designation would allow redevelopment of a deteriorated parcel while preserving the town's design review authority through a special-permit requirement. The council also confirmed Cassandra Sullivan, a school psychologist and National Guard veteran, to a three-year Board of Health term expiring June 30, 2026, on a recommendation from Mayor Robert Hedlund. Councilor Abbott pressed CFO James Mallory on two additional measures — five-year contracts for teacher evaluation software and before- and after-school programming — both referred to the Budget Management Committee after Abbott noted councilors had received "no documentation or backup" for either item.
