Weymouth Votes to Return Meetings to High School
School Committee · Meeting of September 10, 2026
Weymouth High School pauses its phone-locking app rollout after backlash, and the School Committee votes to move meetings back to the high school. Administrators Karen Monahan and Melissa Northup apologized for notifying families before any policy existed, saying there's no timeline and no consequences for skipping the "Commons" app, estimated at $8,000 to $9,000 a year after a state-DESE grant was denied August 31. Member Mary Ellen cited a "1.3 stars" rating; resident Katie Salvaggi raised privacy concerns by Zoom; Weymouth Educators Association President Mike Murphy said "this is policy and it shouldn't just been done." Separately, the committee voted 4-2 for a 6:30 p.m. start time and unanimously to return to Weymouth High School's Humanities Center starting October 1, confirmed a $699,186.42 warrant, voted 4-2 to keep September 8 executive session minutes sealed, and tabled a proposal to rotate members' attendance at town-wide parent council after a tense exchange.
