Town Council · Meeting of October 10, 2026

Weymouth Town Council opens hearing on water fines, sends plan back to committee. Water and Sewer Superintendent Braden and Mayor's Chief of Staff TJ Lacy proposed replacing the town's flat $50 fine with a warning, then $200, then $300 for repeat violations, after state regulators flagged weak enforcement. Councilor Coughlin objected that the town has issued zero citations all summer despite a severe drought, only warnings, calling the timing of a fine hike his "sticking point." Councilor Donovan pressed staff on how success would be measured; staff pointed to reduced consumption data.

Resident Kathy urged tiered water pricing instead of fines alone. The council voted 10-0 to close the hearing and leave the measure in the Ordinance Committee, and separately voted 10-0 to refer a winter-storm vehicle removal ordinance and the Housing Production Plan to committee, and withdrew a fire chief appointment measure after determining civil service appointments are exempt from council approval, congratulating new Chief Matt Harding.
