Weymouth Schools Approve Student Opportunity Act Plan, Hear Over-Capacity Facility Warning

WEYMOUTH — April 4, 2024 — Weymouth School Committee hears all eight elementary schools are over state capacity standards, approves three-year Student Opportunity Act plan. Facilities Director Matt Meehan presented data showing the district averages 126 square feet per student against a Massachusetts School Building Authority standard of 178, leaving the district 29 percent over capacity districtwide, with projections placing every elementary school over capacity by 2029. Assistant Superintendent Brian Smith reported Town Council approved a $928,000 transfer from a residual borrowing fund Monday, bringing the Abigail Adams Early Childhood Center renovation to $5,668,006 and keeping it on schedule for a September opening. The committee voted unanimously to approve the district's Student Opportunity Act plan for 2024 through 2026. During public comment, North Weymouth resident Kelly Aida told the committee her eighth-grade son's Chapman Middle School civics class has cycled through four teachers since September and logged only six completed assignments in term three, saying students face the MCAS civics exam "without a qualified teacher and the subject matter."
