Weymouth Council Accepts Seven Streets, OKs $2M Road Borrowing and Pickleball Courts

WEYMOUTH — June 5, 2023 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously accepted seven private streets as public town ways and approved $2 million in road-and-sidewalk borrowing at its June 5 meeting. Public Works Committee Chairman Ken DeFazio led seven individual street acceptance votes covering Fort Point Road, Walcott Street, Chelsea Way, Crest Avenue, Oakdale Street, Quarry Avenue, and Rosemary Lane, with a corrective vote required after Quarry Avenue was briefly omitted from the record. The council also approved $320,000 for four new pickleball courts at Riley Field, a project DPW Director Steve Kennel said will include lighting, fencing, and parking, and confirmed nine board and commission appointments including Denise Alexander to the Board of Assessors and Anthony DeFino Jr. to the Planning Board. Three budget transfers covering a 46 percent spike in water treatment chemical costs ($300,000), sewer overtime from two major pipe collapses ($50,000), and a DPW fuel shortfall ($100,000) were also approved. Acting Vice President Michael Abbott presided, with President Matthews absent while recovering from surgery.
