Weymouth Council Approves $1.8 Million in Fire Department Budget Transfers

WEYMOUTH -- June 3, 2024, Weymouth Town Council approved nearly $2.5 million in budget transfers and honored three police officers at its June 3 meeting. The council, meeting with two members absent, voted unanimously to approve five transfers recommended by the Budget Management Committee, chaired by Gregory Shanahan, including $983,351.67 to cover a Fire Department salary shortfall after a contract settlement with Local 1616 exceeded budgeted raises, and $820,000 to address Fire Department overtime tied to the reopening of Station 2. The council also passed a ritual slaughter ordinance and a new traffic restriction at Pleasant Street and Mutton Lane South, with Councilor Gary McDougall cautioning the intersection "may be a potential issue for us in the future." Officers Jim Flanagan, Riley Mackin, and Patrick Coleman received citations from the council and from Representative James Murphy; Police Chief Fuller told the council Mackin and Coleman "undoubtedly saved" a teenager's life by entering the water at Lane Beach in June 2023.
