Weymouth Council approves $164,625 to renovate 111 Middle Street for town offices

WEYMOUTH — March 18, 2024 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously approved a $164,625 free-cash transfer Monday to renovate the former school administration building at 111 Middle Street for town office use. Chief of Staff Ted Langell told the council that departments currently operating out of the Whipple Senior Center, along with the IT Department from Town Hall, will relocate to 111 Middle Street by July 1, freeing senior-center space for programming; most of the appropriation covers HVAC upgrades. The council also created an Emory Estate Revolving Account, capped at $5,000 per year, to channel growing paranormal-tour revenue — $8,400 so far in FY2024 — toward the estate's utility costs. Auditor Scott McIntyre of Markham LLP delivered a clean opinion on the town's long-delayed FY2022 financial statements, noting the unassigned fund balance closed at $10.9 million, down from $14 million the prior year, largely because the town spent roughly $9 million in free cash on capital projects against a $5 million budgetary surplus. Five board reappointments and one Community Events Committee appointment were also confirmed.
