Weymouth Council Sends Opioid Fund Restructuring, Two Appointments to Budget Committee

WEYMOUTH — February 5, 2024 — Weymouth Town Council referred a two-part opioid settlement fund restructuring to its Budget Management Committee at the February 5 meeting. The council voted unanimously to send Measures 24-005 and 24-006 — which would revoke an existing opioid settlement stabilization fund and replace it with a newly legal special revenue account under Chapter 77 of the Acts of 2023 — to the committee for review, along with a transfer of $250,122.63 from free cash and $43,417.50 in existing settlement revenue into the new account. The town's available free cash balance stood at $12,949,240 at the time of filing. Two mayoral appointments were also referred: Charles McCrossin to the Conservation Commission for a term through June 2026, and Connor Foley to the Redevelopment Authority for a term through June 2029. Matthew Tierney of the Weymouth Scholarship Fund Committee told the council the fund has awarded more than $1.2 million since 1992, including $125,600 to 50 residents in 2023, and that applications for 2024 are due by March 15.
