Weymouth Town Council Endorses Vision Zero Traffic Safety Goal for 2035

WEYMOUTH — May 5, 2025 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously endorsed a Vision Zero resolution Monday committing the town to eliminating all traffic deaths and serious injuries on its streets by 2035. Appointing Director Robert Luongo and consultant Bill Scully of Kimley-Horn and Associates presented the completed Safe Streets and Roads for All safety action plan, developed under a $336,000 federal grant awarded in 2023, which identified 32 high-injury locations and more than 1,000 annual crashes across Weymouth. The resolution, measure 25071, directs the mayor to form a permanent Vision Zero committee and requires the planning director to file an annual progress report with the council by February 15 each year; an application for federal implementation funding is due June 26. The council also gave favorable action to two free-cash transfers: $500,000 for site work at seven modular classrooms across Hamilton, Nash, and Wessagusset schools, and $2,725,558 — amended upward from the original figure to correct a calculation error — for the Wessagusset Beach coastal walkway, where unexpected clay soils and subsurface rock have driven change orders pushing the project's total cost above $7.3 million.
