Weymouth Town Council unanimously rejects Union Point rezoning request 10-0

WEYMOUTH — September 5, 2023 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously defeats Union Point rezoning request from Mosaic Lending Trust. The council voted 10-0 Tuesday to take unfavorable action on Measure 23-111, which sought to rezone approximately 3.4 acres at the former NAS South Weymouth gym site into the Shea Village Commercial District and Town Center Overlay District. Ordinance Committee Chair Councilor DeFazio reported that both the Planning Board and his committee voted against the measure, citing a parking encumbrance tied to the adjacent sports complex and uncertainty pending a regional Brookfield rezoning vote in Abington and Rockland. The council also referred a $150,000 Beals Park restoration appropriation and six mayoral board appointments to committee, and unanimously approved a Union Point peer review consultant referral to its newly formed Union Point Committee, chaired by District 6 Councilor Anthony Abbott. Under the Southfield enabling legislation, Mosaic Lending Trust may refile its rezoning petition in as few as six months.
