Weymouth Council Closes Union Point Zoning Hearing, Advances Measure to Committee

WEYMOUTH — May 1, 2023 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously closed a public hearing on a sweeping Union Point zoning overhaul and referred a $2 million road borrowing measure to committee in a series of 10-0 votes Monday night. The hearing on Measure 23022 drew residents from Faring Way, Woodstone Crossing, and other Union Point communities, most of them supporting the joint New England Development and Brookfield Properties redevelopment plan, which envisions a mixed-use town center, three linear greenway corridors across a 1,400-acre former Naval Air Station site, and projected net new annual fiscal benefits to Weymouth of between $11.7 million and $12.6 million at full buildout. Several residents raised concerns about the absence of a permanent water supply, with Allison Dossett of 56 Belmont Street questioning the administration's four-year MWRA hookup timeline and calling for developer performance bonds. The council also referred Measure 23083 — authorizing the mayor to apply for MWRA water system membership — to the Public Works Committee 10-0, with a joint Planning Board and SRA public hearing on the zoning measure set for May 9 at Weymouth High School.
