Weymouth Council Forms Search Committee to Fill Vacant District 6 Seat

WEYMOUTH — September 9, 2024 — Weymouth Town Council voted unanimously Monday to launch a search for a replacement for resigned District 6 Councilor John Abbott while advancing a federal traffic-safety initiative that has logged more than 1,100 public comments. Abbott, who represented District 6 since November 2021, resigned effective August 30; candidates must submit letters of interest and resumes to the Town Council Office by 4:30 p.m. on September 27. Planning Director Bob Luongo and Kimley-Horn consultants Bill Scully and Owen MacDonald told the council the Safe Streets for All study has identified roughly 15 traffic fatalities and nearly 100 incapacitating crashes over the past six years, with Pine Street, Broad Street, and the North-East Street corridor among the highest-concern locations. The council also referred a $92,165 Community Preservation Act request for a pedestrian bridge to Budget Management, approved an access easement from 88 Pleasant Street Management LLC for a Pleasant Street walkway, and authorized a Crown Castle cell tower lease extension at the Winter Street police headquarters through December 31, 2045, with councilors requesting full lease terms and revenue account details before the next meeting.
