Weymouth Town Council unanimously adopts $209.9 million FY2025 budget

WEYMOUTH — June 17, 2024 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously approved a $209,968,727 fiscal year 2025 operating budget, along with dozens of free-cash transfers and supplemental appropriations, at its June 17 meeting. Budget Management Committee Chairman Greg Shanahan led the report-out, moving through every departmental line without dissent; the school department received the largest appropriation at $87,472,240, a 3.8 percent increase that Mayor Robert Hedlund, in a letter read into the record, said represents more than 38 percent of all new town revenue. Major free-cash transfers included $800,000 for two modular classrooms at Hamilton Primary School, $750,000 for North Weymouth street and drainage work, and $545,000 for police cruiser replacements. The council also accepted a $500,000 pledged gift from Robert and Karen Hale — payable at $100,000 per year through 2028 — to fund statues honoring Weymouth's five Medal of Honor recipients, a distinction Vice President Berger called unique in the United States. The council suspended its regular July and August meetings, with the next session scheduled for September 9.
